How to Synchronize Files on Different Computers

People who are having more than one computer in their homes can make use of data synchronization software to the maximum extent possible.

  • Firstly, one should download a program for file synchronization in either one or both the systems. Users can read the instructions on the screen and they can be followed for installing the software. Some of the programs available in the market for this purpose include Sync Toy, SyncBackSE, AJC Directory Synchronizer and a few more.

  • Once you are done with the installation of the software, it is time to connect both the programs with the help of USB cable.

  • If you open the main menu of the program, you can find a tab that says one of the following – Synchronize Project, Synchronize Plan, or Synchronize List. On clicking on the tab, a dropdown menu will appear in which you can see a list of files and folders present on both the systems. If you find any of the sections empty then you have to drag and drop the files.

  • Many times, it happens that the two computers are not connected automatically. In such a case, you should find a tab saying “Locate Directories”. You can select the second folder of your choice that you want to synchronize.

In some programs, users can choose files by clicking in the checkbox. Other way is browse window is opened and users can browse through the entire computer and search for files that need to be synchronized to other computer.

  • The sync software is highly flexible and allows the users to customize the way they want to synchronize files. Some of the options that help users in making the desired changes include ‘Tools’, ‘Advanced’ and even ‘Settings’.

Additional Tips

    • While choosing the synchronization software, it is essential to ponder on the fact that the software chosen is compatible with the system you are installing it on. Generally, the system requirements are mentioned on the website of software clearly and users can easily refer to them.

    • In some programs, overlapping can be found between the list of files and folders present on both the computers. In such a case, color coding is used to differentiate files of one computer from another one.
